What is cystic fibrosis?

In cystic fibrosis there is a fault in the gene that controls the passage of salt into and out of cells. Due to this fault, a thick sticky mucus builds up around the lungs and digestive system, which makes it difficult to breathe and digest food. The mucus also makes the luns become more suseptible to infection.

  • Cystic fibrosis is the UK’s most common, life-threatening, inherited disease.
  • Most males with cystic fibrosis are infertile, due to a blockage in the vas deferens – the tube that carries sperm from the testes to the uretha.
  • Other complications can include diabetes, liver disease, brittle bones and gallstones.
