Medical Conditions Awareness Sessions: A School Healthcare Professional’s Resource has been produced by a collaboration of organisations representing children and young people with medical conditions: The Anaphylaxis Campaign, Asthma UK, Cystic Fibrosis Trust, Diabetes UK and Epilepsy Action.
The resource contains:
30-minute awareness sessions, notes and slides on:
- anaphylaxis
- asthma
- cystic fibrosis
- diabetes
- epilepsy
- warm-up activities
Aims
- To encourage communication between school staff and healthcare professionals in order to maintain the quality of life for pupils with medical conditions
- To develop the role school staff play in the management of medical conditions
- To provide up-to-date information on medical conditions to school staff
Learning outcomes
School staff attending awareness sessions will:
- have a greater understanding of medical conditions, in order to lessen anxiety levels for themselves and for pupils with medical conditions
- understand the needs of pupils with medical conditions and be able to recognise the signs and symptoms of their conditions and when intervention is needed
- know what to do in an emergency
- support pupils with medical conditions by being confident in speaking to parents and involving the school nurse and other professionals when appropriate
- be aware of the resources available to them to support their awareness of medical conditions. Additional resources are mentioned at the end of each section and include resources from independent organisations.
